Music and Tradition
Hello! This was honestly hard for me to come up with because we don’t necessarily listen to songs as a tradition (other than Christmas), but we do share many songs as a family that have story and meaning behind them! The first thing that came to mind when I saw this prompt was of course.. Christmas! Christmas has always been a way for my family to bond especially when it comes to setting up the tree, watching christmas movies, and the music. We even love when July comes around for Christmas in July on the radio! Here are some songs we listen to during Christmas (very traditional).
Another song that has meaning would have to be Hannah Montana’s Butterfly Fly Away, I absolutely loved her movie growing up and have to admit I watched it a few months ago and still hold the same love. This song brings me so much emotion as it reminds me deeply of my parents and the love and care they show us everyday. The lines “you tucked me in, turned out the lights, kept me safe and sound at night, little girls depend on things like that” is by far my favorite line. I also love “caterpillar in the tree, how you wonder who you’ll be.” It automatically brings me back to my childhood and reminds me of things like being outside playing in the yard with my parents and sister, grilling out back on a hot day, really anything taking me back to when i was younger. It makes me think about how their love and care has made me who I am. They raised me and my sister to know what true love looks like, how we should be treated, supporting us in all ways, and what family means. This song definitely holds lots of emotion for me and my family.
These last 2 songs are very…. random, but there is story behind them! I remember listening to both of these songs on the way to elementary school in my dad’s explorer quite literally everyday. He says I would make him play Justin Bieber Baby and Apple Bottom Jeans on repeat and I remember it skipping half way through and restarting because it was on a CD. Everytime these songs play, it’s an automatic childhood throwback to being in the car with my book bag on and with my sister. Anytime we hear either of these, my parents retell this story. Yes these songs are extremely random, but I think it’s funny this was our “on the way to school” song choice!

I also had trouble figuring out what to write for this blog and ended up focusing on my study rituals, but I completely forgot about holiday music like Christmas! I usually just listen to the popular songs on Spotify that everyone knows, including We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I love that you mentioned Low and Justin Bieber because I also used to listen to those on repeat in elementary school to the point where everyone in the car with me HATED them. I also used to listen to Miley Cyrus all the time as a kid because I was obsessed with Hannah Montana!
ReplyDeleteHi Briannah! I don't have any traditions in my family either, besides Christmas music lol. We Wish You A Merry Christmas is definitely in that playlist somewhere. I also loved Hannah Montana growing up, I think "The Climb" was the song from the movie that absolutely did it for me...its too good, and it just hits the perfect spot when it comes to songs from movies. I like how you guys would play Justin while in the car, especially baby. You can never go wrong with JB playing; 8 year old me would go ballistic for that man
ReplyDeleteHey Briannah! I really connected with what you said about the song "Butterfly Fly Away" because I also grew up watching that movie (and to be honest still do) so it always holds a special place in my heart. That song specifically is really important to me too for same reasons as you in that it shows the love that parents give. That song was always me and my dad's song and it just reminds me of every thing he did for me growing up.
ReplyDeleteHi Briannah, I know it’s common to play Christmas music during the holiday, but my family doesn’t at all. The only time I hear that song is when I go to stores to do Christmas shopping. You mentioning Low reminds me of middle school. They used to play that song when they would do fun events!
ReplyDeleteHeyy! I love your song choices. The song "Low" is such a fun song, and takes me back to my high school dances. They always played that song and it's so fun and upbeat! And my family typically plays Christmas music (like the song you mentioned) as soon as Thanksgiving is over. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love that your family bonds by gathering together and putting up your Christmas tree, I also talked about Christmas traditions and didn't even think about my family putting up our tree or our decorations. I also love your story about your ride to school and I love that that was a small tradition that you all can share with each other.
